There are only a couple of streets on the island, and they're sand and don't have posted names, that we could find anyway. Everyone gets around by foot, or 1-speed bike, or golf cart taxi. We did a couple of great snorkel and scuba trips out to the reef, met a lot of great people, and generally enjoyed the laid-back island life and tried to avoid sunburn. If you go, go to Habaneros restaurant (the fritters are unreal), and Julia's fresh juice stand (amazing watermelon juice by the liter!). We then went inland and spent 3 nights at the Caves Branch Adventure Lodge. We did 3 of their tours: the waterfall caves trip, the black hole drop trip, and the Xunantunich Mayan ruins trip. All were really great. The caving trip was my favorite, and involved lots of deep exploring of this jungle cave system, and swimming in underground pools, and climbing waterfalls, and a few surprises that we don't want to ruin for you. All the Caves Branch guides were locals, and extremely friendly and knowledgable, and we really liked the whole Caves Branch experience. Our final night we stayed in a cabana at the Tropical Education Center, next to the Belize Zoo. We did a nighttime tour of the zoo that evening, which was really fun (google "royal rat Belize"--we saw those). We used the local Belize buses (old school buses from N. America) to get around inland, and it was a great way to meet the locals. If you're debating going to Belize, stop the debating and go for it! We loved it. | |
