Methow Valley, August 2004
In early August my friend Brad and I decided it was high time to get on our mountain bikes, so we headed east over the North Cascades highway to the Methow Valley. We rode our bikes during the day, swam in the lakes, and explored Winthrop and Twisp by night. There are tons of great trails over there--you won't get bored easily with the terrain. One ride, called Angel's Staircase, was described as "epic" and "the best mountain bike ride anywhere" in our guide book. It ended up taking over 8 hours to ride, including a fairly long section of hike-a-bike over steep scree. It had amazing views and was overall a good ride, but we're not sure we'd call it the "best ride anywhere". It's all about setting expectations correctly, I guess.
