Olympic National Park, September 2002
Margaret and I spent Labor Day weekend 2002 in Olympic National Park.
We didn't get our plans finalized until the last minute, so we drove over early
Saturday morning without a permit, thinking there was no way we'd get into
the very popular 7 Lakes Basin/High Divide area and thinking we'd meet up with
friends in the Elwha River valley. But when we got to the WIC, we were able
to put together a 3-day trip--night one at Heart Lake junction,
a few hundred feet above Heart Lake where the Heart Lake trail meets the
high divide; night two at Hoh Lake, just down the south side from the high
divide trail. (Intrepid readers will recognize this as a
similar trip to the one I took in 2000.
It's definitely worth going back more than once!)
Both camps turned out to be excellent, with great views of
Mt Olympus. Each evening we had fantastic weather, but each morning it was
gray and rainy. (Monday proved to remain gray and rainy for most of our
hike back to the car.) We saw 2 black bears eating berries
on the slopes across Hoh Lake from our camp.
