Montana 2004
In August, Kevin and I drove out from Portland to Montana with our friend's canoe on the car, bound for the Upper Missouri river. We floated the Wild and Scenic section, a 150-mile stretch from Fort Benton to James Kipp State Park (also called the Missouri Breaks). It includes the White Cliffs section, which Lewis and Clark raved about on their journey. We passed through fascinating geological formations, private lands with curious cattle, old homesteader ranches, Lewis and Clark campsites, and golden eagle habitat. It is a gorgeous part of the world, but we were unfortunately there when the river wasn't flowing very quickly, so making our 25 miles each day was challenging. For a future trip, we would go a bit earlier in the season when the water is moving a little faster, and plan on fewer river miles per day. | |
